Hopefully you have a style in mind and you are ready to rock that beard. If you are still a little unsure of what you would like on your face place, google good-looking beards. A high volume of examples will show up that will inspire you.
If you have a vision, good for you. Let’s get started.
Growing a beard is easy. You can lay around and do absolutely nothing and it will take shape on your face. You’re not here because you want to grow a beard, you want to grow a great beard. Growing a great beard, takes hard work and dedication. Don’t forget it is a commitment and that commitment comes with a price.
So for a few weeks maybe a month, depending on your genetic factor, put the razor and trimmers away. Let it grow wild and free. Enjoy the no groom time, while it lasts… Oh yeah, that itch, ignore it. It will go away. If it bothers you that much, it is very unlikely you will be able to make it to those great beard benchmarks. If you quit that quickly, please turn in your man card and send it to the appropriate address;

The last post I referred to beard adversity and the need to be mentally tough. You must have a matching mental game to go with that rugged manly look you aspire to have. Growing a beard takes patience, time, hard work, and dedication. The bearded journey is not easy. It will require your full commitment. As your beard grows, so do the hardships. Do not quit. Stay strong grasshopper.
I will save the full list of hardships for another article but one thing I will tell you, if you decide to add a full mustache to match that full beard, it may just break you.
Your beard is starting to grow and you can already feel a little extra giddy-up in your man strut. Yes it is an intoxicating feeling. Even men who shake hands with the strength of a wet noodle, look and act more manly. All I can say, it’s the beard, it’s the power of the beard. What a wonderful thing.
Real quick note. If you have a beard and you shake another man’s hand like a ten your old boy with soggy pasta as fingers, you may need to change something.
As you wait for the hair to consume your face in that first few weeks, learn a bit about your face. It is important to know your cut lines. All men have different lines because all men have different faces. Some have fat round faces, others have strong jaw lines and most have a relatively unassuming non-threatening face. Whatever you have, it doesn’t matter. Figure out your cut lines.
The are a few extremely dangerous natural predators of a beard. Not knowing your cut line is 3rd on the list following mental commitment of the grower and fire. Fire is never good. It may take a few times but eventually you will learn the line.
My line changes as the length of my beard grows. As I my length grows the line push further down. As I am a big supporter of being unique and an innovator, at times going to high does not look aesthetically pleasing. Although, to each their own; however, I caution and recommend a good cut line should not be on the side of the face. I recommend keeping it underneath the jaw line and close to or where the Adam’s apple starts.
I do not go past my Adam’s apple with growth, although hair does get longer and eventually will cover my entire neck, it does not start past that point. I keep the bottom of my neck clean. Chest hair and neck hair should never meet. Keeping the neck clean for all lengths looks good and is something I suggest.
As I spoke to in the previous article, I was unable to grow hair on a few spots where it was needed. One of these areas was a circle shape directly under my chin. So I had to make my cut line a little higher for a few years. Whatever you need to do, keep it clean. Being ok with and sporting an unkempt beard will result in the full force of the Bearded Guild to use their authority and remove your privilege.
Unless you are Special Forces or belong to another operator group (they can do what they want), do not participate in beard abuse as you bring great shame upon yourself and the rest of the bearded men.
You should grow a beard and make it one that has the ability to start riots in the street. Grow it with the purpose of other men being jealous. Most successful people in the world will tell you, “If you’re going to do something, be the best at it and do it right”. Growing a beard is no different. Take pride as people will take notice.
This is the first month. Enjoy it. Learn your face and what your growth can or cannot do. Remember do not spend money on beard specialty products. The first month of a beard’s existence is about limits. That’s it. Self-discovery of one’s facial hair. In the beard’s infancy planning is key. Have a plan and stick with it.
Happy Bearding
